Eyes Accustomed To Darkness

good fortune attracts attention
some bread and apple with the child
is all she dares

day comes down / night reaches up
what does it matter –
the full wrath of either

a concept of plenty
in every ditchwater

every benevolence
an offering of scorpions

once a week a wise man comes
who can’t find the ground

she and the child wait again
under the bridge that runs
one side /  to the other darkness

he comes poling a log downstream / calls out
can’t stop today /  the water won’t reach

water / wafer / body of
our mother in the porch swing waiting up

How was your day today?

the safe of days broken into …

rage of sorrows broken into
sweet blossoms broken into
salt of blood broken into
blood of days broken into
