first light, water birds
reflections in the old pond
what songs the heart sings

what would be your song if you had nothing
if you had no memory of anything at all
you had no name and no one knew who you were
you had only this breath

and what if you had everything
before you in this one breath
the cruelty of man
the suffering of nations
great mountains and strip mines
greed and great kindness
loss and first love
song, dance, great paintings
the perfect dawn and then the tsunami

the simultaneous creation and destruction
of everything every moment

if everything that is or ever was
lived in this one breath
what would be your song

  1. Bharat, I love this poem. So many strong images and sharp contrasts. I have one suggestion. In the 3rd stanza what if you make it more parallel with the losses coming first in the line Or the opposite all of the creation first in the line and then destruction. Feel free to disregard this if it doesn’t work for you. Hello to Elizabeth. Sue
